Stopping Your Toddler's Frustrating Habit of Ignoring You

Some days it can seem like your toddler is completely ignoring you. You may repeatedly tell him or her to do the same thing, and your toddler either ignores you or choose not to do it. How can you get your toddler to listen to you the first time? It is going to require you to change your parenting style just a bit. The change is painless and you will soon reap the rewards of a well behaved and well disciplined toddler.

The change every parent must make is their current mindset. Do not assume the worst of your toddler. Maybe there is a very good reason the toddler did not do as they were told. Is it possible they did not understand the directions? Parents must learn how to give directions clearly and in a style that is appropriate for the child's age and maturity level. If the task is something completely foreign to him or her, it is a good idea to show your toddler first.

Maybe the child was absorbed in another activity and simply heard you but did not really grasp what you were saying. Their attention was focused elsewhere. You can stop this from happening by either turning off the distraction or turning the volume completely down. In some cases, it is a good idea to tap your toddler gently on the shoulder to get his/her attention. When your toddler has made eye contact, then proceed with your directions.

Last but not least, was the command phrased as a question? Asking a child to complete a task leads the child to believe he/she has an option. As you have probably noticed, they are exercising their option to say no.

Do you want to learn exactly how to eliminate your child's out-of-control and defiant behavior without using Punishments, Time-Outs, Behavioral Plans, or Rewards?
