Songs, Finger Plays & Activities for Infants & Toddlers

That precious little person in your life is definitely the cutest thing on the planet earth, and positively the most intelligent! Why, he was born speaking Greek, and you don't even know any foreign languages!

Strollers For Toddlers

But seriously, language is one of the first ways developmental growth in children is noticed by the general population. Mom and Dad and Grandma and Grandpa know this baby is the next Baseball Hall of Famer or Albert Einstein, but the cashier at the supermarket won't know diddly squat about that adorable big blue eyed baby unless she can speak intelligently while strapped safely in the shopping cart.

Strollers For Toddlers

So how can one help promote language skills besides reciting the abc's and Mary Had a Little Lamb and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star over and over again?

Starting with finger plays, action rhymes, and songs to sing, there will be numerous activities listed. Each will explain the multi purposes of and the age of the child for which the activity is intended. More will be added over time as they are found.

FOR MOTOR SKILLS WITH TODDLERS:

Start with clapping and tapping your hands and feet. Let your toddler mimic your actions.

Read the following rhyme, clapping and tapping when indicated:

I have two little hands that clap, clap, clap.

I have two little feet that tap, tap, tap.

Clap, clap, clap.

Tap, tap, tap.

Clap, clap, tap.

Encourage your child to SAY "Clap" and "Tap" as you say the rhyme.

FOR SELF-CONCEPT BODY AWARENESS WITH TODDLERS:

Sing the following song to the tune of "The Farmer In The Dell."

Where are your piggy toes?

Where are your piggy toes?

Oh no, where have they gone,

(pull off socks)

I see your piggy toes.

Pulling off socks is one of the first skills a toddler learns. Sing this song while pulling off your child's socks, then let your child pull them off by himself. Encourage your child to pull off the socks without any help while you sing the song.

SELF-CONCEPT AND MOTOR SKILLS FOR TODDLERS:

One of the most challenging things a toddler is learning is how to dress herself. Somehow it always seems the diapers come off easier than the shoes go on!

Encourage your child to practice motor skills and begin recognizing opposites by giving her a hat that fits easily on her head. Have her put the hat on and take it off, saying Hat on, hat off, hat on, hat off as she does.

SELF-CONCEPT AND BODY AWARENESS FOR TODDLERS:

Sing the following to the tune of "Are You Sleeping?"

Head and shoulders,

Head and shoulders.

Knees and toes,

Knees and toes.

Eyes and ears,

Eyes and ears.

Mouth and nose,

Mouth and nose.

Have your child touch each body part as it is sung, then repeat the song naming different parts of the body.

THINKING SKILLS FOR TODDLERS:

Recognizing that an object is still there though it can't be seen is a significant milestone for toddlers. Play peek-a-boo often with your child, and play games where an object is hidden with a blanket, scarf or bandana, or inside another object.

MOTOR SKILLS FOR TODDLERS:

Recite the following rhyme with your toddler sitting on your knees. Move your knees and toddler up and down following the lyrics.

Marching, marching,

Up we go.

Marching marching,

Nice and slow.

Marching, marching,

Down, down, down.

Marching, marching,

Through the town.

Let your child stand and stretch up high and bend down low, or be lifted high or put down low as you recite the poem.

MOTOR SKILLS, LISTENING, AND EXERCISE FOR TODDLERS:

Large motor skills are needed in order to develop as well. Sing the following song to the tune of "The Farmer In The Dell" and let your child giggle and wiggle as you both do the movements to the song. Substitute different body parts and actions.

Shake your arms like this,

Shake your arms like this,

Clap your hands and turn around,

Shake your arms like this.

MOTOR & THINKING SKILLS, EXERCISE FOR TODDLERS AND ALL AGES:

This is a great one to do when you're super busy, yet your child is demanding your attention. It is also a great activity to do for transition times such as after story time getting ready for lunch, after playtime getting ready to go to the store, and other difficult times when you just HAVE to do something else besides hold your toddler on your hip.

Recite the following actions, doing the motions slowly at first, then quickly. The kids will dissolve into peals of laughter and free you up to get a few things done.

Clap, clap, clap your hands as slowly as you can.

Clap, clap, clap your hands as quickly as you can.

Rub, rub, rub your hands as slowly as you can.

Rub, rub, rub your hands as quickly as you can.

Roll your hands...

Wiggle your fingers...(sometimes I wiggle my fingers accidentally on their ribs!)

Twiddle your thumbs...

Stomp your feet...

Wiggle your body...

Wiggle your eyebrows...

Slap your knees...

Blink your eyes...

ACTION AND LANGUAGE BUILDING POETRY FOR THE YOUNG CHILD:

Poetry is a clearly delightful way to introduce children to new words and language skills. Here are a couple of poems that have not only lots of fun words to learn, but to act upon, too!

JUMP OR JIGGLE

Frogs jump

Caterpillars hump

Worms wiggle

Bugs jiggle

Rabbits hop

Horses clop

Snakes slide

Seagulls glide

Mice creep

Deer leap

Puppies bounce

Kittens pounce

Lions stalk-

But-

I walk!

~~~by EVELYN BEYER~~~
WHISKY FRISKY
Whisky frisky,
Hipperty hop,
Up he goes
To the tree top!
Whirly, twirly,
Round and round,
Down he scampers
To the ground.
Furly, curly,
What a tail,
Tall as a feather,
Broad as a sail.
Where's his supper?
In the shell.
Snappy, cracky,
Out it fell.
ANON
THINKING SKILLS AND SELF-CONCEPT BODY AWARENESS FOR TODDLERS:
Counting repetitively to two with a toddler gives him a boost in premath skills. Have your child point to his ears, eyes, hands, feet, legs, knees, cheeks, elbows, thumbs, big toes, or heels, and count each one with him: One, two, one, two, one, two...Progress to 5 fingers or toes.
FUN HUGGING CUDDLING GIGGLY TIME WITH YOUR TODDLER OR CHILD OF ANY AGE:
The following rhyme is a favorite with kids of all ages.
Round and round the garden runs the little mouse. (Hold your child's hand palm up, running your finger in circles very lightly on his palm.)
Up, up, up he scampers, (Touch your child's arm on wrist, inside of elbow, and upper arm on each "up".)
Into his little HOUSE! (Tickle your child's underarm on HOUSE!) This is almost guaranteed to be a favorite of both you and your child!
Fun TICKLY KNEE Activity:
All ages of my daycare kids have loved this over the years. Very simple for people who don't memorize things well, it's a great standby for just about any child! Just tickle the child's knee above and to the outside of his knee while reciting the following, and be almost 100% guaranteed that squeals of delight will follow, along with constant begging for MORE, and DO IT AGAIN!
Tickly knee, tickly knee, if your laugh, you don't love me! (That's it! See, I told you it was simple!)
FUN SEASONAL FINGERPLAYS AND ACTIVITIES:
Tune-The Mulberry Bush
Jumping in the pumpkin patch, (jumping through the whole verse)
Pumpkin patch, pumpkin patch,
Jumping in the pumpkin patch,
So early in the morning.
**Substitute clapping, stomping, flying, swaying, winking, etc.
SIMON SAYS FOR HALLOWEEN:
1. Fly like a bat.
2. Stomp like a monster.
3. Walk like a skeleton.
4. Hop like a bunny.
5. Pounce like a cat.
6. Dance like a ballerina.
7. Roll like a pumpkin...
COUNTING FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS:
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
One fell down and broke his plate.
Four little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
One fell down and lost his skate.
Three little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
One fell down and lost some weight.
Two little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
One fell down and said "Don't be late!"
The littlest pumpking sitting on a gate
Fell down and said, "No more pumpkins sitting on the gate!"
FIVE LITTLE OWLS:
The first little owl has great, round eyes. (Point to one finger at a time.)
The second little owl is of very small size.
The third little owl can turn her head.
The fourth little owl likes mice, she said.
The fifth little owl flies all around,
And her wings make hardly a single sound.
FOUR SEASONS POEM:
Spring is showery, bowery, flowery.
Summer is hoppy, choppy, poppy.
Autumn is wheezy, sneezy, freezy.
Winter is slippy, drippy, nippy.
ANON
MUD poem:
Mud is very nice to feel
All squishy-squash between the toes!
I'd rather wade in wiggly mud
Than smell a yellow rose.
Nobody else but the rosebush knows
How nice mud feels between the toes.
by Polly Chase Boyden
Thunder Finger Play:
Thunder crashes. (Clap hands.)
Lightning flashes. (Move hands with zigzag motion.)
Rain makes puddles. (Flutter fingers.)
So I can make splashes. (Jump.)
Fun, new words, even if they're not real, can be a great way to get a baby or toddler exposed to different sounds. The earlier a child is exposed to the sounds of different languages, the easier it will be for him to pick up on them and learn them more fluently. Here are some fun poems with silly words to share with your child:
The Cow Poem:
The cow mainly moos as she chooses to moo
and she chooses to moo as she chooses.
She furthermore chews as she chooses to chew
and she chooses to chew as she muses.
If she chooses to moo she may moo to amuse
or may moo just to moo as she chooses.
If she chooses to chew she may moo as she chews
or may chew just to chew as she muses.
by Jack Prelutsky
And a silly one for an older child, Eletelephony:
Once there was an elephant,
Who tried to use the telephant--
No! no! I mean an elephone
Who tried to use the telephone--
(Dear me! I am not certain quite
That even now I've got it right.)
Howe'er it was, he got his trunk
Entangled in the telephunk;
The more he tried to get it free,
The more buzzed the telephee--
(I fear I'd better drop the song
of elephop and telephong!)
Songs and fingerplays are so much fun, and are a great bonding activity between a child and her parents, grandparents, and other caregivers.
More songs, poetry, and fingerplays will be added to this guide over time as I run across them and as I myself have time. Thanks for looking, and be sure to mark this as one of your favorites for easy reference!
Sterilizing Your Baby's Milk Bottles
Both traditional approaches such as steam sterilizing, cold water sterilizing, and boiling for your baby's bottles and newer, alternative ways such as microwavable bottles, which are sterilized in a matter of seconds. Every parent should know what the options are so that their baby's milk bottles are properly sterilized. Therefore, the most important thing to consider is that your baby, whose immune system is definitely not as strong as a child or adult's, has properly sterilized, germ-free equipment such as bottles and pacifiers. Remember, leaving a sterilized bottle out in the open air for too long can result in the accumulation of more bacteria. Therefore, you can keep a safe (of sorts) for your sterile bottles - this method is preferred if you clean many bottles at a time. Otherwise, you must always clean the bottle with which you will feed your baby very soon before you do so.
Strollers For Toddlers
Whether you are using a manual breast pump, an electric breast pump, or if you are using baby formula, the condition of the bottles you use will be especially important. Do not invite infection. It is an unwelcome and sometimes dangerous visitor for the human body. Because of the lowered immune efficiency of your baby (as with any person with a compromised immune system) sterilization of anything such as plates, cups, spoons, bottles etc. is especially important. Whether you use formula, or store breast milk from a breast pump in a bottle, this article will go over the methods of proper bottle and pacifier sterilization for you. There is no one right way to do get it done, as long as the sterilization method (no matter which method) is performed properly. Here are four virtually always one hundred percent effective ways to sterilize a baby's toys, bottles pacifiers, and more:
Strollers For Toddlers
If you find yourself in a situation where you have no electricity, or perhaps heating water is not possible, try the cold water sterilization approach. There are special tablets designed especially for you in such circumstances. There will be a specific amount of tablet or solution to use depending on the amount of water. The solution is incredibly effective for completely cleansing the bacteria from your baby's bottles, pacifiers and other items. Do not undermine the sterilization of your milk bottles, when it concerns milk from formulas, or whether it is breast milk.
Usually these kinds of tablets and / or solutions are dissolved into water and the baby bottles will be submerged in the solution. This means to check for any air bubbles in the bottles or the nipples to be sure that everything is properly soaked. It can take up to forty minutes to clean bottles this way. Nonetheless, this method really "saves the day" (to steal the expression) when you find yourself in a situation where microwaving, boiling, or steaming your bottles is not possible before bottle feeding.
There are also many convenient kinds of microwave safe baby bottles. Usually to sterilize them is a matter of a quick rinse and scrub, and about ninety seconds in the microwave. This is a great solution almost anywhere you go - but, of course, sometimes other types of sterilization methods will be necessary.
Steam sterilizing equipment is a great way to clean and sterilize your baby's bottles and / or other items. There are all kinds of electrically operated equipment designed for cleaning germs and removing all bacteria with steam. When you use steam sterilizing there is no smell or taste. Be sure they dry completely before you fill or store them. As with all methods of bottle cleaning - if you clean many bottles at once, you can keep them closed away and fresh for longer periods of time.
Boiling is another, and the forth method of baby bottle sterilization I will mention to you. If you submerge them for at least ten minutes, perhaps more, boiling your baby's bottles will eliminate any harmful germs and / or toxins. Boiling is a common method of purification, as a matter of fact, one of the oldest and most well-known. It is certainly more antiquated than microwavable, chemical, or electrical devices also used for cleaning bottles every day. Boiling is the oldest, but is nonetheless incredibly effective, method of cleaning bottles. And boiling is as efficient as any of the others combined.
Don't forget, you need to be sure you have the right bottles! There are both traditional and alternative ways every parent should know so that their baby's milk bottles are properly sterilized. Whether you are using a manual breast pump, an electric breast pump, or if you are using formula, the bottles you use will be especially important. But do not undermine the sterilization of your milk bottles, when it is the milk from baby formulas, or whether it is breast milk. There is much to remember when you have a new baby - so try especially to keep the most important things in mind.
Understanding the Newborn Immune System
We come into contact with millions of germs each day, yet most people only get truly sick two or three times per year. We rely on our immune systems to fight off the germs and protect us from bacteria and viruses that can make us ill. However, we are not born with an up-and-running immune system from the moment of our birth. The newborn's immune system must be strengthened and developed during the first several months of life.
Strollers For Toddlers
While a baby is still in the mother's womb, he or she receives the building blocks of the immune system. From the mother through the placenta, the baby acquires immunoglobulin G, or IgG, which is the most prevalent antibody in the immune system, comprising 75-80% of your germ fighters. Because these antibodies bind to invading bacteria and viruses, they are a major part of your immune system, and they help prevent infections while the baby is still in the womb.
Strollers For Toddlers
At the time of birth, babies still have the high amount of IgG in their bloodstream, yet their overall immunity to germs is still not completely developed. Now, the newborns must receive further immune system help via the breast milk. However, the first thing secreted from the breasts is actually the colostrum. It is a thick, carbohydrate-rich substance that is easier for a baby to digest. Additionally, the colostrum is packed with antibodies to give the newborn a first package of other, adaptive immunoglobulin types.
Once the regular breast milk starts to flow, it also contains necessary immune system components. By drinking breast milk, babies receive doses of immunoglobulins A, E, M, D, and more IgG. This is called passive immunity. However, this does not mean that the immunoglobulin doesn't fight germs-it just means that the mother has transferred active immunity to her child ("passed" it on).
Over time, the mother gives less and less immunity to the baby via the breast milk. In fact, the newborn's germ-fighting system begins making its own antibodies when the child is 2-3 months old. The production of antibodies does not reach a normal adult rate until the baby is about six months of age.
When a child is newly born, its immunity is not yet strong enough to protect it from harm. Thus, doctors and hospitals should be very careful with allowing newborns to come into contact with things that can cause possible birth infections.
If your baby has developed a birth infection as a result of hospital negligence, you should contact a birth injury attorney to discuss your rights. For more information, check out the experienced birth injury lawyers from Lowenthal & Abrams, PC today.
Best Baby Hairstyles - 2010
Your little bundle of joy is adorable. Your baby's hairstyle -- and whether or not he has hair, for that matter -- is one of the first things other people will notice as they look at your baby. Make sure you take a minute and give your little one a fabulous hairstyle that people will remember as much as baby's smile.
Strollers For Toddlers
If Your Baby Has A Little Hair
Don't fear, there are great baby hair options for even the finest, shortest baby hair. There are bows made with Velcro that will painlessly cling to even the thinnest piece of hair, making baby look great.
Strollers For Toddlers
For a baby boy you don't have to go with the standard hat approach - mix it up by tying a bandanna around the little guy's head. He'll be too cool for school. Or too young for school - either way he'll look great. A bandanna can work for a little girl too, just pick a color you love or one that matches the outfit she's wearing.
The baby headband - you know, the one that looks like a garter belt from a wedding - is the standard choice for babies with a little bit of hair, and they look adorable if you want your little one to stand out from the crowd.
If Your Baby Has Lots of Hair
Sure, when your baby has lots of hair there are more styling options, but it can also be more difficult to style. It is also important to cover up any bald spots from sleeping in the same position if you want the finished style to look polished and photo-ready.
Ponytails are a staple of baby hairstyling. You can put one almost anywhere on your little girl's head and it will look too cute. If you want to take baby's hair to the next level, consider more than one ponytail on that adorable head. Two ponytails on the top of baby's head will keep the hair out of the face and leave less hair to be slept on during the night. An added bonus, the hair will begin to fall around the ponytail holders, leaving a cute little mushroom-shaped top. People will stop and stare because they will be in awe of how precious your little one looks.
Braids can be more difficult because baby hair only grows so fast, but if you have nimble fingers you can add some small braids that will look great. Make sure to use smaller ponytail holders than you would for your hair, because then you don't have to wrap it around as many times.
Right up there with dressing your baby in the coolest fashions, styling baby hair is one of the most fun parts of having a little boy or girl. Keep it simple or go wild... it's your choice!
Educational Toys For 10 Year Olds
Today we live in a good age because there are so many educational toys available, far more then previous decades. The growing interest of combining entertainment and education is on the rise. There are educational toys for any subject and interest your 10 year old boy or girl has. Developing a child's analytical, linguistic, and motor skills as early as possible will be highly beneficial for them in the long run. Some of us hated or disliked studying when we had to, but if we had some of the educational toys and games like today we might have taken a different more open approach to studying.
Strollers For Toddlers
Kids would like to play sports, ride bikes, and play with their action figures or dolls most of the time, but just like in the adult world, work and studying has to be done. A great way to build a 10 year olds vocabulary is through word association games and verbal puzzles. When learning is put in game form it becomes more fun and interesting for young kids. typically, when young kids are having fun and are interested they will remember more of what they learned.
Strollers For Toddlers
Learning math can be relatively boring for some children with many of us hating math as kids. Multiplication mosaics combines math with art. How so? When a correct answer is given the child fills in the chart and as they continue a mosaic of an object appear, thus, creating some type of art. Not only are they learning their multiplication tables but creating pictures at the same time. Not just multiplications can be used with this type of game but division as well.
For those future engineers a paper airplane making book would be ideal. Not only does it combine technical with artistic skills, but also give the young child to see what the efforts have created. For more detailed and difficult projects model airplanes, ships, and cars would be a challenge for any 10 year old. Do-it-yourself chemistry sets and rocket sets would be very valuable also.
Another game that promotes creative thinking and problem solving abilities are divide and spatial games. These games typically have images you must separate using sticks so each image has its own individual space, it sounds easier then it actually is.
If you would like to teach a 10 year old financial responsibility so they know money doesn't grow on trees there are games that can achieve this also. It is never too early to teach children how to budget and manage money.
this is the time when kids really start to know what they are interested in and it is important to nourish there education and creativity with the proper games and learning tools.
Celebrity Dads Give Push Presents; Get in on the Trend
Rich celebrities are accustomed to being gifted with expensive jewelry, and the trend extends to the day they give birth. Case in point: Pierce Brosnan gave wife Keely three gold and diamond bracelets when their son Paris was born. Ben Affleck presented wife Jennifer Garner with pricey purple jewelry after she delivered daughter Violet (which the unfussy and practical Mrs. Affleck reportedly made him return). Sarah Jessica Parker got a gorgeous charm bracelet from hubby Matthew Broderick when son James made his debut. Other celeb dads celebrate the arrival of their new babies by buying their wives and girlfriends expensive bling such as diamond rings, diamond earrings, pearl necklaces, pearl earrings, and jewelry made with their baby's birthstone.
Strollers For Toddlers
Up until a few years ago, these "push presents,"--so named because they're tokens of appreciation for labor--were news to me. All I got when I delivered my son was...my son. Not to say that I'm not immensely grateful; he's my pride and joy. But a nice pair of diamond studs or a pearl cocktail ring, say, to show me that my husband appreciated my months of hard pregnancy and hours of even harder labor would have been "ice" on the cake.
Strollers For Toddlers
What made the lack of gift worse was that many of my girlfriends got stunning jewelry from their thoughtful and grateful husbands. My favorites were a pearl bracelet, sapphire and diamond earrings, a diamond and yellow gold band, and a princess cut yellow diamond ring.
Poor dear, my husband didn't know it was done.
Apparently, he's not alone. In researching this article, I sent a query to all the guys on my e-mail list (whose wives can thank me later). In addition to wanting to know if they knew what a push present was, I also wanted know if they thought the idea was touching or silly. Did it put pressure on them? Was it just another damn thing they'd have to spend money on?
Naturally, the feedback I got was as varied as the guys on my e-mail list, which includes my boss, my trainer at the gym, my brother, my best friend's brother, my neighbors, my co-workers, and my dentist, to name a few.
First, for the sweet:
From Dave: "Yes, I gave my wife a gift. I didn't feel pressured. She deserved it and more."
From John: "I did buy my wife a charm bracelet after our daughter Lindsay was born. It had charms on it for both of our daughters."
From Taylor: "Yes, I bought my wife gifts both times in addition to flowers. The first time was a cultured pearl necklace (like she needs more jewelry). The last was a Kate Spade diaper bag."
From Wayne, father of four: "Maybe for one or two, certainly not all four." [I certainly remember: Wayne's wife, my friend Sandy, was the recipient of the highly coveted and aforementioned sapphire and diamond earrings.]
From Howie: "Considering my wife had a C-section with both girls, is there a cut present?" [Actually, there is, and it's called a 'cut your guts out' present. My friend's daughter Nicole got a sterling silver bracelet from her husband for her efforts].
"I gave my wife a birthstone for each girl, but forget the 'push present' idea. Those nine months are the easy part. It's for the 18 years afterwards that you have to give your wife the gifts! Honestly, those two girls can scream!"
Dennis: "Funny, before my wife was pregnant I never head of a push present. My buddy and his wife had a baby four months before us and his wife was sure to tell my wife about this gift thing. It's not that I wouldn't have gotten my wife and mother of my son a great gift, but it was put into the realm of 'did your husband get you a diamond bracelet?' type thing. It goes to show that keeping up with the Joneses makes some folks do things they might not otherwise do." [OK, maybe this answer doesn't technically fall under the sweet category as it's got some ambivalence tossed in.]
"Not sure spending thousands on a gift is the best thing for the new family. Was this gift idea created by the diamond companies? So, yes, I did get my wife a gift. Before I'd even heard of a push present, I had my son's birthstone set in a ring and necklace."
From Paul: "I gave her a day at the spa."
From Derek, "I gave her a Tiffany ring because it was a nice thing to do, I'd heard, and because she deserves it."
Now, for the incensed:
From Ben: "No, I didn't get my wife a push gift. The only thing on my mind was making sure all the important stuff was taken care of. To add something so stupid on top of this earth-shattering event is ridiculous. The special gift is the gift of life and the creation of a human being. Now when I look back at those times I wouldn't' even recall the insignificant gift. Sounds like some baloney cooked up by a jewelers' association."
From Steve: "I agreed to fund the kids for 22 years each. That was my gift."
Peter L: "Not a big fan of the push present. A woman gives birth to a child and now she expects a gift??? While I have absolutely no idea what it's like to be pregnant, I don't know of any woman who has regretted it. The whole expensive jewelry thing doesn't sit well with me. That's what birthdays and anniversaries are for." [Thank God I didn't marry Peter, not that he asked.]
From Dave H: When Meryl was born I gave my wife a new bike chain for her road bike ( value) and installed it for her (free of charge.) It was the least I could do, since I had taken the chains off of all of her bikes around the end of month seven when she refused to give up riding. She promptly began riding two weeks after popping out our kid and since she was lighter than what she was used to, she could climb hills faster than I could. The good news is that she's now four months pregnant and she's slowing down more and more by the day, which enables me to seem faster."
And last but not least, the clueless:
Peter C: "Can't remember but I'm sure I gave something."
Matt: "Oops, was I supposed to give something? Why doesn't anybody let us know these things?
Jim: "Color me thoughtless. It never occurred to me."
John S: "I must be a bad husband. Three kids in four years and I didn't get Kim a gift for any of them!"
What's a guy to do?
Whether you agree with the sweethearts, the cads, or whether you're one of the clueless, consider yourself duly informed, and remember that nine months of pregnancy topped off by excruciatingly painful labor (not to mention sore nipples) is no picnic. It's always nice to be appreciated, especially when you're a new mom, and your hormones are screaming what the heck have I done??? I used to be a sexy, carefree vixen, for Pete's sake!!!
What's more, the jewelry you give your child's mother can be passed down to that child when he or she marries or turns 21, say. Best of all, you don't have to spend thousands. Many quality jewelry pieces are just as affordable as they are sentimental.
To help you get started, here are my favorite push presents:
o Pearl studs: Timeless and elegant, pearl studs go perfectly with bathrobes and spit-up. Plus, high quality freshwater cultured pearl studs cost as little as or a pair.
o Diamond studs: A little pricier than pearl earrings, sure, but diamond studs are a jewelry staple. That means your efforts won't be in vain; these sparklers will get a ton of use. And you can have a nice pair for well under 0.
o Birthstone ring: Lots of options and price ranges here depending on the stone and the setting. (Leave out diamond accents and you probably won't break the bank.) Remember, an elegant ring can be handed down to your little one; so make sure you get something of good quality that won't tarnish.
o Nantucket Basket: A gorgeous gold basket pendant necklace that holds the birthstones of your children, the Nantucket Basket necklace is meant to be added to with subsequent births. You might find the necklace pricey, but once you buy the pendant all you have to do is add the birthstones for each subsequent child. (Push present out of the way forever.)
o Mother and child pendant: The sterling silver version of this sweet circle pendant can be had for less than .
o Charm bracelet: The sky's the limit here, but the initial investment shouldn't be too bad. Like the Nantucket basket, this piece can be added to on special occasions. Charms are priced all over the place; it's up to you what to spend. Baby birthstone booties are a favorite charm of new moms, though.
o Pearl strand: Traditional and classic, a pearl necklace is a gorgeous choice. If you have a baby girl, she can wear it in the future on her wedding day as her something borrowed and as a reminder of how much her mother means to you. If price is an issue, akoyas and freshwater cultured pearl strands are the way to go. Save the Tahitians and South Sea pearls for when your stock splits or your patent gets approved. You get the point.
Go Shopping!
Okay, future fathers, now that you know about push presents, there is no excuse not to get your children's mother a little (or big) token of your appreciation. And, no, you don't have to be rich and famous like Matt Damon or Michael Douglas, or blow future college savings. There are lots of affordable gift options that don't cost a bundle. Do a little research on the Internet and you can find unique and meaningful jewelry that fits your budget. (Just make sure to have it gift wrapped. We hate when you forget that.) And don't worry too much that we won't like it. It truly is the thought that counts. Not so sure? I'll let you in on a little secret: If you really want a foolproof way to be a hero in your wife's eyes, change a diaper once in a while!
6 Parenting Tips on Special Education Law and Transportation
Are you the parent of a child with autism or a physical disability that needs transportation? Do you wonder what the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) states is the schools responsibility, to provide transportation for your child? This article will discuss what IDEA requires as far as transportation for your child with a disability. Also discussed are parenting tips that you can use, to help your child receive this important service.
Strollers For Toddlers
Under IDEA transportation is considered a related service. A related service is transportation, developmental, corrective, and other services. . .as may be required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education. . .
What this means is that if your child requires transportation in order to benefit from their education, special education personnel are required to provide it.
Strollers For Toddlers
Parenting Tips:
1. When advocating for your child, remember that; transportation not only means to and from school, but also in and around the school building, and any specialized equipment required by your child.
2. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act prevents discrimination on the basis of disability. The law reads: No qualified student shall on the basis of handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or otherwise be subjected to discrimination under any . . .transportation. . .or activity.
For Example: Your child with a physical disability is not allowed to go on a field trip, because the class cannot get the wheelchair bus. This would be a section 504 complaint, because your child is being discriminated against, on the basis of their disability. I have dealt with this situation, and the school district usually quickly fixes the transportation problem, if you tell them that you may file a Section 504 complaint. Section 504 is covered by the Office of Civil Rights in Washington, though each state has at least one office.
3. If your child requires an assistant in the classroom then you may be able to get a bus assistant, if your child's disability requires it. The goal of transportation as a related service is to provide safe access to education. So if your child needs a bus assistant in order to get safely to school, school personnel are required to provide it.
4. If your school district is not providing needed transportation for your child, you can be reimbursed, for providing the transportation yourself. Make sure that your child's IEP, states that they need transportation as a related service, and that you will be reimbursed.
A district may also be required to reimburse parents where:
A. Transportation is needed to provide FAPE and the district fails to meet its obligation.
B. The district doesn't recognize the need for transportation.
C. The district makes inadequate provisions for transportation.
5. If your child's extracurricular activity is related to their IEP goals and objectives, then transportation must be given. For Example: If your child has autism and needs to work on social skills, they can gain that from extra curricular activities. In that case transportation needs to be given by your school district.
6. School districts are not allowed to shorten your child's school day due to transportation. Unfortunately it happens all the time, and you may have to stand up to special education personnel for the good of your child.
IDEA gives children with disabilities equal educational opportunity, which means a full school day. I have often said that if parents of children without disabilities found out there child was to leave school early for transportation, they would be outraged. But parents of special needs children are supposed to accept it. Do not accept it, stand up for your child.
This article has given you a lot of good information about transportation, that you can use to benefit your child's education.
Authoritative vs. Authoritarian or Permissive Parents
The media have recently highlighted a fundamental debate among parenting experts: To be a drill sergeant or an empathic listener? To spank or not to spank? To punish or to teach?
Strollers For Toddlers
In more than two decades as a parent educator, I firmly believe that effective discipline means setting firm limits while, at the same time, treating children with respect and dignity. This is authoritative, not punitive, parenting. What's the difference?
Strollers For Toddlers
Example: Your children are fighting about which TV show to watch. The authoritarian parent bellows, "That's enough! No more TV for a week! That'll teach you kids to get along." This parent dictates her solution, and the children have no opportunity to solve their own problems or learn to cooperate. They may be resentful but are too fearful to express their true feelings.
The authoritative parent says in calm, clear voice, "If you two can work out a way to share your TV time, you're welcome to watch. If not, the television goes off." This parent uses firm discipline (stating a consequence that will result if the squabbling continues), but also guides children respectfully toward working out their own solution--and then follows through. If she doesn't follow through, she is not a credible parent and her statement becomes an empty threat that her kids won't take seriously.
The problem with the authoritarian ("Do it because I say so!") approach is that it uses adult muscle to force youngsters to obey. This may work in the short run. But over time, children may become more defiant and disobedient. Some may become sneaky and do the same thing again but are more careful not to get caught. A child who's constantly under a parent's thumb will find ways to evade or avoid the rules.
Here are some tips to help you become a more effective parent without becoming a pushover or a dictator:
Choose your battles. Parents and children have conflicting needs. Adults need to hurry. Kids want to dawdle. We want some order. They like to make messes. Clashes are inevitable, but don't get pulled into every skirmish. One of my favorite maxims is "If you're not selective, you're not effective." Decide what's really important to you, like leaving the house on time in the morning without yelling or tantrums - yours or theirs. Talk to kids at night about how to get ready on time the next morning. (For example: Set out clothes together and makes lunches that evening, or have a check list of what needs to be done to avoid "morning madness." This way you'll all begin the day on a happier note.)
Talk less. Children become "parent deaf" when we endlessly lecture, nag, command, criticize, cajole. They've heard it all before, so they tune us out. To get children to listen, the trick is to shorten the message. Brevity is authority. Instead of preaching about how messy their rooms are, make a brief impersonal comment that describes what needs to be done: "Those dirty clothes belong in the hamper" or "Books go on the shelf."
Set clear, firm limits. Example: Before your son goes to a friend's house, let him know exactly what time he must come home. If you arrive to pick him up and he begs to stay longer, you can say, "I know you're having a good time, but it's six o'clock." If he resists, don't be ambivalent by saying, "Okay, just five more minutes." Don't argue. Simply state, "Six o'clock was our agreement. We need to go now."
Use consequences instead of punishment. Example: Your child leaves his new roller blades outside overnight after you've reminded him to bring them inside. They're stolen. An authoritarian parent would lecture: "I warned you, but you never listen to me. You got just what you deserved! That's the last time I'll buy you anything expensive."
That won't teach him to be more careful with his things. It will only make him angry, inept, or resentful toward you. Instead, you could take an authoritative: "I can see you're upset that your roller blades are gone and that you'll have to do without them. Maybe you can think of a way to earn some money toward another pair." An empathic response like this one teaches a lesson in responsibility without being punitive.
Express your anger without insult. It's only human to get upset when kids disobey or provoke us. Parents have a right to feel angry, but we don't have any right to hurt, insult, belittle, or frighten children.
If you're about to explode, take an "adult time-out" to cool off. You could say, "I'll be in my room for 10 minutes, and we'll discuss this when I come out." Parents who use demeaning language or lash out physically fail to teach respect because they're being disrespectful toward the child. This doesn't help a child develop a conscience, and spanking models the very behavior that we want children to avoid.
Respect is a two-way street: Kids learn it best if we model it. They won't learn to respect themselves or others if respect has not been given to them. Another way to show respect is to listen to your child, especially when he is upset. Listening closely - without interrupting or injecting adult answers - shows you are really interested and care about him.
Though they don't always show it and probably won't thank you at that moment, children really do want parents to provide safe, predictable structure in their lives. We can do that by being an authoritative parent who sets limits on behavior, but also treats kids the way we all want to be treated - with love, dignity and respect.
The Effects Of Single Parenting On Children
Times have really changed. Many old customs and traditions which were taught and practiced for several years are becoming obsolete now. The modern culture has changed and outgrown values and beliefs that were thought to be the core.
Strollers For Toddlers
Even though moralists and conservative people are expressing disgust over the currently evolving belief and culture systems, the truth is, however, what has been unacceptable in the old world is now becoming fast and rapidly rising trends.
Strollers For Toddlers
Some of the effects of single parenting have ranged from social to financial issues.
For decades and even centuries, one of the most concerning issues to conservative people is the issue of single parenting. Ancient social philosophies have often linked single parenting to adventurism and liberation of people.
The Catholic Church has always been the dominating mentor and guide of traditions, norms and living. The church is so adamant to advocate the sanctity of the sacrament of marriage of matrimony.
That is why the procreation outside wedlock is strictly considered a ground for excommunication. It is one of the greatest sins, according to the Catholic Church, to engage in pre-marital sex.
From the church's point of view, single parenthood can be considered as a punishment of some sorts, for those who disobey the teachings of the church. Obviously the fundamentalists think otherwise. So, is it?
Single parenting is already becoming a rapidly growing trend in the society. Studies show, that in the US alone, there are four single parents to every ten parents and there are two single parents for every 10 adults. Could you believe it?
The Child
Since the decision of single parenting is taken by the parent, one voice is often ignored and sometimes unheard of. It is that of the child's.
It has been found that single parenting has adverse mental, emotional and psychological effect on the child. This has been validated by psychologists and advocates from time to time.
The direct effect of being raised by a single parent is especially visible in child's thinking and mental mind set.
Although single parents must be commended for raising a child alone, he or she should not be blamed for any mental or psychological result of the situation to the child, as psychological assert.
Tests and observations have consistently concluded and found that single parenting makes children more aggressive and rebellious. Experts say the behavior could be the outcome of the angst and humiliation the child experiences while growing.
There are very obvious reasons to make the child feel abnormal, different and unaccepted. The traditional families have two parents, the mom and the dad, jointly raising kids with help and advice from each other. Whereas in single parenting, a single person decides what is best for the child and sometimes takes extreme measures to get it accomplished.
Neighborhood also plays an important role in the development of single parent raised children. Sometimes it treats them too cruelly, which can make things worse. Humiliation and awkward feeling of insecurity is dangerous if left untreated or undetected in the child. That child can take the burden for the rest of his or her life.
In some conditions, single parents and their children both may need professional help through counseling. Counselors can give reasonable advice to the child and the single parent to make sure every small issue and difficulty is ironed out.
Counseling from professionals can form or make up a support system that will make single parenting easier and more effective. Because single parenting is no ordinary parenting, the parent and the child must learn to accept the situation minus the negative feeling.
It's a difficult situation for any child to be raised with one parent, but surprisingly, not an impossible one anymore. Society has accepted the facts and has stopped looking at single parenting as an abnormal occurrence. There is a positive trend which is especially useful in reducing, if not nullifying, the adverse effects on single parents and their children.
Good - Appropriate Touch with Children
If it seems as if 'no touch' is the 'best touch,' with a child, I can assure you that there is such a thing as 'good touch.'
Strollers For Toddlers
Everyone needs touch that soothes and nurtures. Studies on children in orphanages in England during World War II revealed that without touch children become morose (anaclitic depression) and often die despite adequate nutrition and proper hygiene.
The most important guideline in touching your child is respecting your child's likes and dislikes. When your child is non-verbal, you will need to watch for signals, such as: wincing, squirming, holding the breath, or crying to decide if the touch is disliked. Any sign of dislike or discomfort needs to be respected. You need to cease the activity immediately, without question and without shaming your child.
Respecting and honoring your child's preferences, including while playing, is critically important. When you ignore your child's preferences you are in fact, unwittingly saying, "Your perceptions do not count." Your child will learn through lack of respect and disregard to their preferences, that they have no power.
When a child believes she/he is powerless with the most trusted people in his/her life (parent[s]), she/he ceases to exercise our power with anyone. Therefore, it is paramount when your child objects to any form of touch--contact play touch, tickling, etc. that you stop immediately. On a broader scale, the outcome could be catastrophic. Children learn their life skills vis-a-vis their parents. If they perceive themselves as powerless with their parents, they will be powerless with other adults; thus, other adults could include a sex offender, who is waiting for just such a child to become their next victim. See my article: How Sex Offenders Groom their Victims.
GOOD TOUCH:
o Gently rubbing your child's back, arms, hands, fingers, head, cheeks ears, forehead, feet and toes. Rubbing their legs needs to be modified to avoid the inner thigh, which is a highly erogenous area.
o Hugging is the most magnificent form of touching. Hugging says: "I am here for you.," "I really understand your feelings," "I am proud of you," "Allow me to comfort you," "I love you," and much more. There are fourteen different types of hugs: The A-Frame, Ankle, Side-to-thigh, Back-to-front, Bear, Cheek, Custom-tailored, Grabber-squeezer, Group, Guess Who, Heart Centered, Sandwich, Side-to-side, Top-of-the-head hug. Hugs can account for the majority of the touch you give your child.
CAUTION:
o As the parent(s) or caretaker, you know your motives when you touch a child. "What is wrong with giving my child a pat on the bare buttocks as a show of affection? What is wrong with kissing my baby on the bare buttocks after she/he has had a bath?" There is probably nothing wrong, and these actions would not be considered 'bad touch.' However, your child is learning via this activity; "What is acceptable touch with someone the child trusts."
o Sex offenders use acceptable, affectionate touch for bonding and desensitizing the child. If the child is accustomed to being patted on the buttocks by the parent, their predisposition to this form of touch would likely leave them vulnerable in allowing anyone whom they trust to do the same. This creates a possibility that someone who is a sex offender can begin the desensitization process seemingly innocently with an increased possibility of the child's compliance. Therefore, if the child does not protest when she/he is patted on the buttocks, the sex offender accepts this as confirmation the child is accustomed to being patted on the buttocks and will progress to sexual touching. If your child is not accustomed to being patted on the buttocks and you have instructed her/him to protest uncomfortable or unwanted touch, a sex offender will be reluctant to go further. If the child protests or moves away, it is a signal to the sex offender that this child might tell.
o Blowing air bubbles (a.k.a. raspberries) on their stomach is every child's delight. However, this activity can be used by a sex offender--emphasis that only Mommy or Daddy is allowed to blow air bubbles.
o Tickling is a very 'ticklish' kind of touch. No pun intended for this very serious subject. Many sexual abuse or incest survivors state their abuse started with tickling. However, in many incidents, the child intuitively knew that the tickling was different in nature, but she/he did not know they had a right to protest. Therefore, if you tickle your child, be extremely watchful where you tickle. Avoid highly erotic areas such as the buttocks, breast area, groin, or inner thigh.
o These precautions apply equally to boys and girls. Additionally, reinforcing the lesson that your child has the right to protest is advisable if the tickling, touch, activity, for any reason, is uncomfortable or unwanted. It is imperative you stop any touching activity if your child displays any signs of discomfort. Stop immediately!
Heeding these cautionary suggestions regarding touch will thwart the majority of sex offenders.
